In order to deliver the research program effectively and ensure that it produces suitable benefits to the SMEs involved, the following objectives have been set:

  1. Demonstration of ability to manufacture a patient-specific medical implant with a turnaround of 7 days from receipt of CT scan data to delivery of implant
  2. Development and testing of an integrated software solution for designing and manufacturing a patient specific implant within clinical processes; using patient scan and surgeon driven product personalisation to create an implant CAD file within less than 8 hours.
  3. Development of the SLM process and post-processing for the manufacturing of personalised medical implants according to EC Directives. This will involve definition of the laser processed Ti6Al4V in terms of mechanical strength, tensile properties, fatigue and accuracy according to ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 13485, Medical Devices and Quality Management Systems.
  4. Join together the SMEs, using an online web portal, into a web-based supply-chain for the marketing, management and distribution of personalised implants made from titanium alloy Ti6Al4V. This will allow the diagnosis to treatment time using a personalised implant, which currently takes 4 to 6 weeks, to be achieved within 1 week.
